Do You Know What You’re Doing With Data Protection?

Not sure where to start with your data protection requirements? The Contract Doctor recommends the best starting point is with your privacy notice, cookie policy and your internal documents.

Privacy Notice

If you have a website your privacy notice needs to be available on each and every page. Your privacy notice will inform people visiting your webpage what you will be doing with their data. If you do not have a webpage for your business, it is important to remember that every time you gather data, you do need to send a copy of your privacy notice to clients you are gathering the data from. You may ask yourself “Why do I have to do this?”, simply put, this is to inform them of what exactly you will be doing with their data.

Cookie Policy

For many people out there who don’t know what a “cookie” is, a cookie is a block of data that tracks your usage within a website, in simple terms if you “accept cookies” on a webpage you have just visited, that data is then stored for the next time you visit that same webpage. From a data protection perspective your cookie policy will tell people what cookies you have on your website so that they can choose to “opt in” or “opt out”.

Your Internal Documents

As an employer you do need to inform your internal staff how you’re looking after and protecting their data, it is also important to tell them what policies they are to abide by in everyday practice, in order to fulfil the obligations you have said you would fulfil set out within your privacy policy.

Data Protection can be tricky to get your head around, If you want to discuss anything further, or you need more help with your data protection needs, feel free to get in touch and myself or one of the team can help.
